In research conducted at the University of Hyderabad, a new accelerated model has been developed that will help in increasing the bioavailability of the administered drug in the body. This will ensure that the body uses most of the drug for better results and faster recovery.

Dr. Ashwini Kumar Nangia, Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Hyderabad, stated that 80% of drugs formulated as tablets or capsules suffer from poor bioavailability due to their low solubility and or low permeability. Similarly, during clinical research, 90% of the drug formulations show poor bioavailability. Hence, Dr. Ashwini and her team studied and researched various methods to overcome the problem of low bioavailability and make the medicines fully absorbed and available to the body.

The findings of the study were published in the journal Wiley international journal, Angewandte Chemie, of the German Chemical Society. The study showed that overcoming the challenges of poor bioavailability of a drug molecule has led to the discovery and optimization of a marketable formulation. The new model proposed by the research team invokes the supramolecular hetero-synthon in addition to the molecular pharmacophore. Dr. Ashwini explained that by refining both molecular functional groups and hydrogen bonding synons, with the latter imparting high solubility and permeability in the same molecule, the overall drug discovery cycle can be accelerated.
